Preparing for Your EEG: A Simple Guide
We want you to feel comfortable and relaxed during your EEG. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:
1 Sleep: Try to get a good night's sleep before your appointment unless instructed otherwise. Some EEGs may require sleep deprivation, so please follow any specific instructions given.
2 Hair/Skin Care: Please wash your hair the night before or the morning of the test. Avoid using any hair products such as gels, oils, or sprays, as they can interfere with the electrodes. Please also avoid using any makeup or skin products on face especially forehead to be more specific.
3 Medication: Continue taking your usual medications unless otherwise instructed by your doctor. Have a list of your medications with you on that appointment.
4 Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing to help you feel at ease during the test. Avoid wearing jewelry, especially around your head and neck.
5 Food and Drink: You can eat and drink normally before the EEG. However, please avoid consuming any caffeinated beverages (such as coffee, tea, or soda) on the day of the test as it can affect the results.
6 Relaxation: The EEG is a safe and painless procedure. You’ll be seated or lying down, and the technician will place small electrodes on your scalp to record brain activity. You can have your own music or practice breathing exercises to help you feel calm.
